CHILDRENS HOSPITAL & DENNY HAMLIN CELEBRATE GRAND OPENING OF BON AIR THERAPY CENTER

Construction of the Bon Air Therapy Center was made possible by donations from the Denny Hamlin Foundation, the Junior Board of Children’s Hospital, and others.

RICHMOND, Va. (April 19, 2010) – Children’s Hospital will celebrate the Grand Opening of its Bon Air Therapy Center with a reception on Wednesday, April 28. A child currently receiving therapy at the Center will do the honors of cutting the ribbon.

Special Guests at the reception will include Denny Hamlin and other representatives from the Denny Hamlin Foundation. In June 2009, the Denny Hamlin Foundation donated $20,000 to pay for construction of the main gym at the new therapy center.

“Giving kids the ability to heal through physical therapy is something that is very important to me, and to be able to do this in my hometown means so much more,” says Hamlin.

The Bon Air Therapy Center opened in late December 2009 with 5,300 square feet of space that includes two gyms, two sensory motor areas, seven quiet treatment spaces, a psychology office, and a comfortable waiting room with a dedicated children’s nook. The Center replaces the former South Therapy Center which needed additional space to meet growing demand for pediatric physical, occupational and speech therapy.

“The new Center has more space for each child seen in therapy,” comments Sallie Tidman, OT/L, Director of Therapy Services. “The large gyms allow more room for therapeutic activities like running, skipping and hopping and for equipment like treadmills and exercise bikes.”

In addition to the donation from the Denny Hamlin Foundation, gifts were made to fund the Bon Air Therapy Center by American Family Fitness, Mr. and Mrs. John R. Congdon, the Junior Board of Children’s Hospital, Metropolitan Health Foundation and the Sunshine Gift Shop of Children’s Hospital.

The Bon Air Therapy Center is located in the Sheltering Arms Bon Air facility near Buford Road and Midlothian Turnpike.
